What is stress?

Stress is an emotion that everyone at some point in our lives has felt or experienced.

It is an adaptive defense mechanism for human survival. What this means is that the brain and body respond to any demand, whether internal or external.

Stress can affect your health. It is important to pay attention to how you cope with minor and major stressful events so that you know when to seek help.

  • Working long hours without resting and the type of work you do in that job.
  • The school
  • Major changes in life
  • Traumatic events
  • Some health conditions
  • Genetic
  • Environmental
  1. Some examples of stress include:
  • Routine stress related to the pressures of work, school, family, and other daily responsibilities.
  • Stress caused by a sudden negative change, such as job loss, divorce, or illness.
  • Traumatic stress experienced in an event such as a serious accident, war, robbery or natural disaster in which people may be in danger of being seriously injured or killed. People who experience traumatic stress often experience temporary symptoms of mental illness.
  • The different types of stress:
  1. Acute: It is a reaction that lasts little and usually disappears quickly. You can experience it when you experience the danger of crashing your vehicle, fight with your partner, ride a carnival machine or when you do extreme sports. It also happens when you do something new or exciting. All people experience acute stress at some point or another in their lives.
  2. Chronic: When experienced for an indefinite and prolonged time, you can have chronic stress if you have money problems, an unhappy marriage or difficulties at work. Any type of stress that continues for weeks or months is chronic stress. You can get so used to chronic stress that you don’t realize it is a problem. If you can’t find ways to manage stress, it could cause health problems.
  • The damage of stress to health: when your body is in stress it causes an imbalance of the nervous system: it stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system. Consequently, the sympathetic nervous system responsible for various activities independent of the will causes a release of adrenaline, the effect of which is to increase the heart rate.
  • Symptoms of stress vary from person to person and are very diverse.

  • Migraines
  • Insomnia or nightmares.
  • Physical fatigue.
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Digestive disorders, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Cardiovascular disorders
  • Sexuality disorders.
  • Sweating
